A man was warned against smoking another spliff after being caught growing cannabis to combat his back pain.
The message came from city magistrates who imposed a 26-week prison term, suspended for a year, on Michael Gill.
They were told that 19 plants were growing in the loft of his home on Highwood Avenue, Bilborough. Equipment had been set up to speed the harvest.
Ran Johal, mitigating, said: "The defendant takes it in relation to back pain. There is a letter from his doctor to confirm that position. This was no commercial enterprise."
Gill, 48, started the crop ten weeks before the raid. Police seized a mobile phone and found no evidence of dealing. No cash was seized from the house, added Mr Johal.
The court heard that Gill was occasionally given a cannabis cigarette by a friend. But presiding JP Deborah Kenyon said that could be sufficient to bring the suspended sentence into effect.
She told him: "We realize historically you have been taking cannabis but if there is just one - to use the terminology - one spliff, and the police catch you, then you will face those months. It is as simple as that."
A probation report said Gill went on the internet to learn how to grow cannabis.
"He said it was the biggest mistake of his life and that he should have stopped cannabis use previously but it was to help with his back pain. He occasionally has a spliff which a friend gives him.
"When police came, it was a wake-up call," the report added.
Gill used a walking stick in court and was allowed to remain seated during the hearing. He was said to suffer from depression, asthma and high cholesterol. He pleaded guilty to the production of cannabis on March 3.
Daniel Pietryka, prosecuting, said 19 plants were discovered by police officers. He has been watering them by hand and they would have been ready in "a couple of weeks."
Mr Pietryka added: "He said no-one else had anything to do with it." Magistrates ordered the destruction of the drugs and equipment.
