Depressed Graham Samuels got a £105 court bill for growing cannabis - but his partner has already penalized him.
She was annoyed to discover he had used her attic to cultivate five plants, city magistrates heard.
Sarah Roberts, mitigating, told the court: "His partner was completely unaware of what was going on in her home and was unimpressed.
"To some degree, he has been punished in his own home." She told the court that Samuels had been prescribed anti-depressants but "self-medicated and topped up with cannabis."
"He is not a heavy user. He had it in the evening, that sort of usage," Miss Roberts added on behalf of Samuels, 40, of Rodwell Close, Bilborough.
He admitted producing cannabis in Bramley Road, Nottingham on May 15. He was given a one-year conditional discharge with £85 prosecution costs and a £20 government surcharge.
Kate Hartley, prosecuting, said the plants were found during a police search. At the time, two children were in the house.
As well as the plants, officers found some cannabis buds drying in the roof space. An air filter and thermometer were present.
Presiding magistrate Peter Forster told Samuels: "There were small children in the residence in which the drugs were produced."
The two JPs ordered the destruction of the drugs and the equipment used to boost the growth.
