The Palm Springs City Council on Wednesday got the ball rolling on a proposed zoning ordinance regarding medical marijuana that would allow providers organized as nonprofit collectives or cooperatives to operate in the City as long as they are located in areas zoned for industrial use and at least 500 feet away from schools, public parks, playgrounds or residential areas.

The providers would also have to comply with recent guidelines issued by state Attorney General Jerry Brown.

After initiating the ordinance, the council chose to refer it back to the Planning Commission for further review and recommendation. No legislative action was taken.

“The next step is that the Planning Commission will hold a public hearing and then submit their recommendations to the City Council,” City Attorney Douglas Holland said. “It will then be up to the council to decide whether they want to consider the Planning Commission's recommendations and place the ordinance on a future agenda.”
