Pinole, CA - The City Council has unanimously agreed to set a 12-month moratorium on medical marijuana dispensaries, also known as cannabis clubs.
The ordinance approved Tuesday evening comes in response to a query several weeks ago about locating a medical marijuana dispensary in Pinole, said city planner Elizabeth Dunn.
The moratorium is supposed to give officials time to "create some criteria" regarding location, hours of operation, security, delivery, aesthetics and signage, Dunn said. The city's zoning ordinance does not address cannabis clubs.
The city will have a task force advise it in drafting an ordinance. Mayor David Cole urged including in the task force "stakeholders" such as a patient and a doctor savvy about medical marijuana.
City Attorney Benjamin T. Reyes II said the city will look at other cities' experiences in regulating medical marijuana outlets but cautioned there is no "one-size-fits-all" ordinance.
