Watts and Lumens for grow room?

Say that I have a 40 sq ft. area (8x5). The height is adjustable.I may just go with 1 1000 watt bulb. I have a reflector in mind that I want to get, but Im wondering if 1000 watts would be enough? I haven't settled on what type of lighting I am going to use, because I don't know how much of it I will need. I am not going to purchase the reflector untill I have a better idea of what I will need. How many watts and or lumens do I need for an area that size?

PS. I have been searching for a post about this but can't find what Im lookin for. Links would also be appreciated

Generally a 50W per Sq Ft is desired. Currently using in a 32 sq ft rm 1000w ( 600w HPS / 400w MH) this covers the area well. Maybe a dual (2-600w HPS) will spread out the light canopy to cover the total 8x5 area.
