Screen construction from wooden dowels?

Is there any reason i cant use birch wood dowels to construct a screen? I cant think of a reason but most of the ones ive seen arent so i thought it warranted a question since i just ordered a shit ton of dowels. 5/16 to be exact with some 3/8 for legs and whatnot.
