Jefferson County Agriculture Coordinator Jay Matteson says the north country should grow a new cash crop - industrial hemp.

"I was concerned as well until I did the research and found out hemp is different than marijuana. They don't have the same effects," he said.

Hemp is a form of cannabis and it's a cousin to marijuana.

Hemp can't be smoked like a drug because it has an extremely low amount of THC.

That's what's in other strains of cannabis that gets someone high.

A company can legally grow hemp in New York when it's partnered with a college research program.

Marc Privitera is with PreProcess, Inc., a chemical engineering firm in California, and has family who runs a dairy farm in northern New York.

Privitera wants to start a new kind of farming in the region.

"You grow hemp either for a fiber, which means you plant it close and let it grow tall, or you grow it for seeds and flowers," he said.

Even though Jefferson County isn't growing any industrial hemp, some stores are already selling hemp-based products.

The Mustard Seed in Watertown has food items that use hemp oil.

The store says hemp oil products are high in omega fatty acids.

"It boosts immunity, helps with the skin, as well as cardiovascular health," said Tory Cooley, The Mustard Seed Natural Market.

Hemp can also be made into fabrics and biofuels.

Jefferson Community College declined to team up with Marc Privitera, but he says other upstate colleges may be interested in sponsoring a hemp plot in the north country.
