Clark County commissioners approved 25 existing medical marijuana dispensaries to sell recreationally — but the big question remains: can alcohol distributors get the pot to those stores in time for a July 1 start?

One by one, Clark County gave the green light to companies, including Essence Dispensary, which is operated by Armen Yemenidjian.

"Our plan is to go full steam ahead. We will be open July 1," said Yemenidjian.

The slew of retail approvals comes one day after a judge in Carson City ruled that alcohol distributors will get the exclusive rights to handle the marijuana — becoming the middleman between cultivators and storefronts. It's a decision that has some concerned about possible delays.

"I don't agree with the decision because we would like to keep prices lower for our patients and our customers," said Yemenidjian.

However, industry insiders say a July 1 start for recreational marijuana sales is very likely.

"Right now ... the Department of Taxation is meeting with the distribution companies — there are only five of them — they are going to come to some solution today or tomorrow along with the Department of Taxation to make sure that we can have these July 1 sales ready to go," said cannabis advocate Jason Sturtsman, adding that dispensaries are gearing up for the launch even if the distribution through alcohol wholesalers is not set up right away.

"They'll be able to sell what's on their shelves until the distribution companies are able to get up and running ... and being able to get product out to these individual dispensaries," said Sturtsman.

Clark County commissioners also sent a strong message to all the dispensary owners that they have the right to revoke their business permits if they break any rules.
