Hello world!
If anyone is reading this, first let me say thank you. I'm not much of a joiner (probably like most of you) but I've been lurking in the shadows for a few weeks and have been so inspired by the wealth of knowledge and cooperation in this community that I felt I had to be a part of it. Before I jump into the specifics and pictures of the grow, please allow me to introduce myself.
This is not my first grow, but it is my first grow in a very long time. Like fifteen years. A lot has changed since I used to grow in my first apartment after college guided by an outdated Rosenthal guide, and trying to put off getting a full time job for as long as possible (you can do it for years). So I'm excited to see what's out there these days and rekindle the love affair with my plants and GC. (If you get confused by any of the shorthand or stupid and/or annoying initialisms you read, there is a glossary in my signature.)
This grow came about for a few reasons but the first and most important is that I recently relocated back to my, now recreational, home state after a decade in NY. Nosey landlords and cramped apartments don't make great grow spots, and I've been lucky to afford the boutique delivery services, so I never considered growing again. Now I'm working on a new business venture not far from where I grew up, and the best part??? I get to grow weed with my dad! Hopefully we can get him set up here in the near future so he can introduce himself, but I'd like to note that this isn't his first grow either. He's done some outdoor and two other indoor grows, but as will become evident with further reading, it's not something he's ever taken very seriously, but has done successfully on a small scale. That being said, both he and I have a firm grasp of all the basic principles, a loose grasp but little practical knowledge of the more complicated concepts or reactive therapies, and almost certainly we know exactly enough to get ourselves into trouble in a myriad of ways. So buckle up and watch us hopefully not embarrass ourselves too much.
We are starting this grow at roughly week three of veg for the from seed plants and week three of flowering plants my dad had vegged for three months under practically non existent lighting. See details for those plants in the Strains section below and photos following all these dumb words.
Grow Space - We converted an unused basement room in my parents' house (neglected pottery studio for mom) into our grow room. The room itself is about 70 sq feet, much more than we need, so we built out a flower space and will use a cabinet we cut the top off of for veg. The flower room is 3.5' x 5 and the table is roughly 3 x 4. The room has a sink which is great and theres a good space under the veg table for future cloning. There is a table for trimming etc. and enough room left over for hanging or hopscotch or whatever. Also theres a portrait of Dick Nixon. This is my dad's and meant to be ironic so please don't judge . This time of year it's running about 72 - 84 degrees with 40 - 55% RH (running a small humidifier).
Strains - We are growing seven strains between the two spaces. Currently flowering are 5 x Lavender and 4 x Liberty Haze all from clones that originated from Barney's. These are plants my dad had already been growing in an other area in the house. He was using a mix of twisty bulbs and shop LEDs and generally not giving a shit about them. They were vegged for three months and while very healthy, were super stringy and small. You can see those and his cat, Yuki, in the pictures below. Anyway new lights new life, as nobody said ever!
Currently vegging are fifteen photoperiod plants mostly from seeds that a grower friend had on hand (except the CBD). These are as follows: 5 Pineapple Fields from Dynasty Genetics, 4 Trinity x Pure Kush from unknown (forgot to ask my friend), 3 Harlequin x Miss Universe from Dynasty Genetics, 1 I95 x Sour Diesel from Mass Blooms, and 2 Cherry Bullet Delight CBD plant Highly Evolved Medical Plants. Only the CBD and the Trin x PK are feminized so we'll be playing the waiting game on the sexing game.. wait that did't sound good.
Lights - For veg we are using a 400w T5 hood and 2 50w COBs for supplemental. In the flower room we have 1 Mars Hydro 300, 1 Mars Hydro Pro II Epistar 400, 1 Unmentionable Brand 600, and 2 Unmentionable Brand 300s. I've only ever used HID but my pops didn't want to spend a fortune on setup and didn't want to deal with the heat. We are in a cold climate and in the winter their wood fueled boiler already keeps the basement hot. Next step for these lights will be a COB conversion which I'm looking forward to sharing.
Medium - Soil: PROMIX BX consisting of 75%-85% Sphagnum, ?% Perlite, ?% Vermiculite, ?% Limestone, + Mycorrhizae. In a combination of earth boxes, planter pots, and bags. The flowering plants that were started by Dear Old Dad or DOD as we will refer to him form now on, were started in MG soil I believe. They were very root bound and the soil was like cement when I transplanted, them so those plants are probably only half Promix in reality.
Pests - Funny you should bring pests up because... drumroll please... We have fungus gnats!!!! Or I'm pretty sure we do. You can see a pic of one below. They must have some with the clones but thankfully DOD has already used bacillus thuringiensis so it's a small problem that should be corrected without too much trouble. Right now the plants are happy. If anyone disagrees with the FG diagnosis, please let me know, as I am usually wrong about everything.
Ferts - The vegging plants got their first fert last week in the form of top dressed premixed organic fert. The ingredients are as follows: Bat Guano, Neem Seed Meal, Fish Meal, Crab Meal, Shrimp Meal, Kelp Meal, and Langbeinite. Teas will be introduced in the not too distant future. For flowering we will be using good old fashioned Tiger Bloom, and probably some other stuff that I'll update as we progress down the road.
I think that covers the pertinent details but let me know if I left anything out (assuming as least one person reads this and hasn't jumped off a roof out of boredom). Without further ado, let me introduce you to the girls (and boys).
Here are the little babies at two weeks. It's been so long since I've grown I made the classic rookie move of giving the second watering about two days early which the Pineapple Fields plants felt particularly sad about. You can't really see the sadness in this pic but they got droopy and showed the nitrogen pain.
And the same little babies at three weeks feeling a little better about life but showing some slowed growth. At this point they've only gotten T5 light and we just added the two COBs to supplement.
These are the stringers I talked about earlier and how they looked on flower day one under the blurple. This picture is objectively terrible I know, but it gives a good ideas of the overall shape of these plants when we put them in flower.
This is Yuki, Queen of the Netherworld and Devourer of Rodent Souls
And here is that same room now at 21 days flower. Sorry about the blurple. I'll shoot better pics next time.
Lavender 1 at 14 days flower.
Lavender 3 with Dick at 14 days flower.
Liberty Haze 1 at 14 days flower.
Lavender bud at 21 days flower.
I believe this is an FG? I've never seen one in person so make my day and tell me I'm wrong.
I think that's all for now. Here's to hoping anyone reads the thing you spent a couple hours writing. Cheers! - LEDSS
