Sangmang's Coco Country Jack Herer Grow 2020

Howdy folks. Meet Dolly, Emmylou, Joni, Skeeter and Loretta. 5 feminized Jack Herer seeds to be germinated in a paper towel to rapid rooters to 1 gallon fabric pots with CannaCoco.

This is my first time using coco so I'm all ears if you know your stuff.

I will be growing & training these seedlings into small/bonsai style mothers kept in the 1gal pots until I harvest their clones and pick whichever lady tops the charts to keep as my solo mother plant. This will be a micro grow for personal use. I plan on using the SOG method during flowering also in coco. I will be hand watering unless I get sick of it. Already I realize I should probably have square pots for ease of root pruning instead of round fabric but c'est la vie.

Here's what I'm working with:

78"x78"x78" Grow Tent
2'x4bulb t5 w/htg pure par veg fluoro bulbs
Mars-hydro tsl-2000 led 300w
6" 440cfm exhaust fan
Oscillating fans: floor, canopy, ceiling

Nutrients:
AN PH Perfect MGB
AN Voodoo Juice
GH CaliMagic
H&G Roots Excelurator Gold
Great White Mycorrhizae
Hesi Supervit(cancelled, no stock. Can anyone find this stuff?)
My feed schedule will be based mostly on a thread here by @Cultivator that I read all 70 some pages of haha.

I'm sharing this veg space with my partners house plant business so I'm only using one corner of this large tent. I'm sure things will get interesting having a variety of plants in there. I plan on picking up a 2x4 come flower time where I will relocate the mars-hydro led which is currently over some Hoyas I believe.

I think that's a long-winded enough intro. I'll get some pics of the setup tomorrow and we'll get started.

Backlog:

10/21
Dolly, Emmylou, Joni and Skeeter cracked open in paper towel. Loretta is still being shy. Will refer to them as #1-5 from now on.

10/22
Soaked rapid rooters:
200ppm tap water+calmag+roots accelerator gold+great white
#1-4 planted in rapid rioters

10/23
#5 opened in paper towel, moved to rapid rooter
#1-4 broke through top and taproot through bottom of plug.

10/24
All seedlings transplanted to 1gal fabric pots 2:30am.
Mycorrhizae(great white) sprinkled throughout pots and in hole where taproot will sit.
All given 50ml of same solution used for plugs around base of stem.
Soil/canopy max: 75f 87%rh min: 66f 42%

10/25 - TWINS
#5 is confirmed twins(2 identical seedlings from one seed). Didn't know this was a thing. I'm going to leave them as-is in the same pot and they'll now be referred to as Loretta(Lynn) and Crystal(Gayle)
#1-4 looking good. Very slight decrease in growth consecutively down the line, #1 being the best.
Soil max: 74f 81% min: 64f 42%
Canopy gets 90f without exhaust running.
Lights 4" above seedlings

Humidity is getting into the 40s at night so I set the exhaust to run 30 on 30 off until I get a better humidifier. Probably going to build one of those house of hydro mist maker units. Any other suggestions? The tent needs to stay upwards of 70% humidity for the other tropical plants in the shared space.

10/26 THRIPS

#1-4 look good @ 1.5" The twins are tiny.
Mixed 2l nutrients:
135ppm tap water
to
200ppm calmag
to
450ppm ph perf mgb
add .6ml roots gold
5.8ph

Fed each seedling 100 ml on and around root area at 2am(lights out)
Lights 6" above

We had some suspect pepper plants in the tent and I found several thrips on the sticky yellow cards near my seedlings. Some fungus gnats as well in the opposite corner. Not great! I don't see anybugs on the seedlings/coco but it's worrisome. Can I spray seedlings with Spinosad? Looking into predatory bugs(lacewings) as well. I assume ideally you shouldn't intermingle plants like this but its the way it's gonna be so I'll have to make it work.

The stems are quite red. Should this be a concern? Ive been giving them 100mL of light nutrients (under 500ppm) daily at lights out. Also wish that I went into solo cups before the 1gal pots but oh well.

20201027_221511.jpg

I love the twins although they're very small and probably not very viable I would assume. But I'm excited to see what happens.

20201027_222125.jpg

Here's a bunch of Hoyas and Aroids.

Thrips are under control. We sprayed all plants in the tent with spinosad except the seedlings and moved most other plants out of the tent for the time being.

The humidity gets below 40% with the exhaust fan running so its time to deal with that. The little humidifier we have is only 300mL/hr and only raises the humidity 10% when the fan is on. I think I need something more like 900ml/hr to be able to keep this space above 70%rh with the 6" exhaust running 24/7. I ordered the House Of Hydro 3disc mist maker which puts out 1500mL/hr and you can install it in a large reservoir so you don't have to fill it every day like my current one. I'll run it with my inkbird humidity controller and install a water level cutoff switch too so I don't overheat the unit when I inevitably forget to refill. I'll post some pics of the process.

10/29 - Day 7

All showing second set of true leaves.
I dug down a tiny bit and roots are through sides of plugs and into coco

Lights 6" up

Soil max temp 75f min 67f
Rh max 88% min 47%
The big swing in RH is because my exhaust fan is 30min on, 30 off until the better humidifier comes and I can leave the fan on 24/7

Old nute mix smelled bad so was dumped
Mixed 2l batch and fed seedlings 100ml/ea:
135tap
to
175calmag
to
450 ph perfect mgb
add in
.6ml root excelurator gold
5.8ph

I ordered a 2x4x5 flower tent last night, not that I'll need it for a while.

No new seedling pics but heres Francis to hold you over.

11/1 Day 9

20201031_233312.jpg

20201031_233212.jpg

20201031_233353.jpg

Everythings looking good. Still running same low ppm feed 100ml/ea. Will probably up the strength next batch.

I built a strong 1500ml/hr humidifier bucket(House of Hydro) and this thing blows away my regular humidifier.
20201029_223314.jpg

But ive decided my exhaust fan is too strong for my tent. Its a 440cfm 6" variable speed. My tent is only 275cu ft. When the fan is on low its about 68f 70-75%rh. Which is pretty good but I need the temp to be higher for the other tropical plants in the tent. This is with an 800w oil heater running constantly as well. I'm going to try to put a T split on the exhaust ducting and put one duct in, one out of the tent to reduce how much the fan is exhausting from inside the tent. Hopefully at that point the humidifier and heater won't have to work as hard and I can level things out. The swings are too crazy with the fan on a timer...
Screenshot_20201101-015506~2.png

In other news I just got 3 Berry White seeds in the mail, but I'm thinking I want to keep a mono crop until I get the kinks worked out of my setup.

I think the fan issue is squared away. Hooked up the 6" tee split to two 4" ducts, 1 outside and one inside the tent and now I can leave the fan on 24/7 and my humidifier easily gets it up to 80%rh where the inkbird controller shuts it off and then on again at 75% Temps are still hovering 70-75f which is ok with me. It will increase when the rest of the house plants move in with more lighting.

11/5 Day 13

4th node coming in on all.
Upped feed strength to 600ppm
150tap
200calmag
600 mgb
.6ml roots gold excelurator
Upped feeds to 150ml ea/plant daily at lights out
Added 1/2 strength(1ml/l) carboload and will continue daily with 1/4 strength(.5ml/l)
Added once weekly voodoo juice 1.5ml to 750ml today's feed.

I think I'm going to start LST'ing them around the edge of the pots at the 5th node. I wish I had them in smaller than 1gal pots so I can keep very small bonsai mothers. I don't plan on topping before I start LST. Ive never trained a plant before so we will see how it goes.

20201105_141707.jpg

This is Emmylou(#2) who is doing the best so far by a hair.
20201105_141745.jpg

Loretta Lynn & Crystal Gayle still hanging in there but very small.

11/10 Day 18

I realized I was treating these plants like they were going to be flowered but I just need to keep these small as mothers and then flower their clones. So I decided to just continue to light feed them base nutrients(600ppm) and work on learning how to train until its time to take clones.

I tied 3 of them to the side of their pots without topping and will spiral them around the edge of the pot and see what happens. I topped one but I'm not sure what else I'll do with it. The twins I'm just trying to keep out of each other's way.

I LOVE your room setup. I also grow in a basement and having this kind of space would be such a blessing!

One note, but I am new too so take it in that light. Most of the growers I have seen start seedlings then put into a small pot to encourage root development. I have been told plants will grow faster and with better root development if they are allowed to grow and root out in smaller pots. I am using clones to support a perpetual grow and find they work best in 6" pots for 3-4 weeks. Once they start to get almost root bound I repot directly into 5 gal pots and they take off like a rocket. It's actually caused a bit of a problem since my flowering girls seem to want a little more time than I had hoped. I was shooting for a 56 day - 8 week flower period) but it looks like they could go at least 63-70 days!

Sweet start and a beautiful space to make this a successful grow, following your journal. Good luck!

Thanks! Yeah I agree and I definately plan on doing it that way next time around. Ill do a smaller pot like you say for the clones of these moms also. And thanks for the follow!

11/20 Day 28

20201120_150604.jpg

I've just been feeding low strength still waiting for these mothers to mature so I can take some clones. I upped the base nutrient strength to like 750ppm for one feed and got some burned leaf tips so I backed it down again to around 600ppm. I've only been feeding them about 200ml daily which seems really low to me but they haven't complained yet. I doubled that last night and gave them 400ml each so we'll see how the coco looks in 24 hours. We have some fungus gnats in the tent so i'm afraid to keep the medium too wet.
20201120_150738.jpg

I'm happy with how short the LST is keeping them. There are several off shoots that are breaching the canopy now. I might have to take a round of cuttings and discard them soon. I'm afraid its getting too dense in there and leaves are touching and holding moisture between them. The 2x4 tent is in use until mid December, it's full of peppers and tomatoes so as soon as that's cleared i'll hopefully have some rooted cuttings to move in there and start flowering.

The rest of the tent.

There was a pole right in the middle of the tent that was annoying so i put a support beam in and got rid of it
20201120_151431.jpg

I decided to split up the twins and test out my clone bucket. I built this thing years ago and never used it because all my plants ended up male and then I gave up for a while. But it's been cloning house plants like a champ lately.

I cut down the smaller of the two twins and stripped a couple lower nodes and scraped and just put it in the bucket. This is officially my first clone attempt.

Day 59

Its been a while since I updated. I was having issues causing a lot of damage to the leaves and couldn't pinpoint the cause. I'm pretty confident that it turned out to be nutrient build up, coupled slightly with high humidity. The first flush I ever did was like 6 weeks in and the runoff ppm was in the 1400 range and I never fed over 600ppm. I then cut back over 50% of each plant removing any damaged foliage. So lesson learned that I need to water to runoff every time until I can get my feeds dialed in better. And I put a fan on the moms 24/7. Heres a link to a thread troubleshooting the issues with pics if you're interested.

I took my first round of cuttings, 4-5 from each plant. Dipped in clonex and put in small 2x6 cell trays with coco and plain 5.8ph water in a dome under a GE 40watt led light i was given. 2 clones are in the clone bucket to compare rooting time.
The 3 healthiest from each mom will get rooted fully in solo cups then transplanted to 1 gallon pots and put into the flower tent under 12/12 mars hydro tsl2000. All 5 mothers will be kept in veg until harvest to find the best phenotype at which point I'll only keep one.

I also upgraded my veg area with shelves and a tray that I rigged with a drainage tube. I used a plastic pan that is meant to go under a dog crate and cut a hole in the corner and connected a tube. And painted it white with plastic spray paint.

20201221_151329_HDR.jpg

Lastly, here is one of the twins that I cut down and rooted a while ago. I think I'll flower her with the clones and use lst/topping to keep her the same height as the other clones. Just to see what impact more veg time has on yield I guess.

Day 11 after taking cuttings.

They were all rooted through the small cell trays, some better than others but I decided to go ahead and transplant 3 cuttings from each mother to solo cups. And 2 to a tuna and a bean can haha.

I watered all the coco in a separate container to the desired saturation, not too wet, then filled the cups around an empty cell to make a perfect hole. Then sprinkled great white in there.

Feed:
130ppm tapwater
to
270 calmag
to
550 PH perf MGB
2ml/l voodoo juice
1ml/gal roots gold

Will continue with close to this nutrient mix until the solo cups are rooted through then they'll go into 1 gallon smart pots and put into 12/12.

I have some vivosun fabric pots and the smart pots are clearly better. It doesn't seem that the roots can pierce the vivosun pots to air prune.

I decided that im already sick of hand watering so I am in the process of configuring a DTW drip system for the flower tent. I will update with pics when that's all setup.

Day 4 since transplant. Still havent watered the clones since the transplant into solo cups. Going to keep feeding wet/dry cycles for a week or so until the roots fill out more.
