‘Why I collect land rent from hemp smokers at Molete’

FOR the Oyo State police command, the assault launched on a notorious hideout in Molete area of Ibadan, Oyo State last Thursday, which served as a joint for hemp smokers, has put to an end the reign of the kingpin of the enclave simply identified as Sikiru Adewuyi.

The suspect, who made a spirited but futile effort to justify why he was collecting land rent from hemp smokers in the area however denied being involved in criminal activities in the area.

According to him, everybody knows me in this area, they know that I dont get involved in criminal activities but I smoke hemp.

The two-hour operation which was led by Taiwo Lakanu (an Assistant Commissioner of Police) in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Bureau (SCIB) was said to have caught the 91 suspects arrested unaware. A car frequently used for robbery operations was recovered from the hideout while charms, cutlasses and Indian hemp were also recovered from the suspects who the police had identified as principal suspect.

While explaining how he got involved in hemp business, the suspect told newsmen that he got into the shady business just to keep body and soul together, adding that theres no big deal in promoting hemp business in the land since the so-called important people in the society also smoke Indian hemp.

Since the arrest of the hoodlums, Nigerian Tribune findings revealed that no case of armed robbery has been reported in Ibadan metropolis as members of the public strongly believed that the enclave was a fortress where policemen never dared venture into before the SCID police boss led his men to invade it.

However, two press briefings held by the command at the police headquarters, Eleyele to unmask the 91 suspects arrested in Molete and the one held at the SCID Iyaganku which was addressed by Taiwo Lakanu (the SCID boss were the double-barrelled onslaught against criminals by the command in recent times.

The highlight of the parade of the suspected criminals by the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mr. Raphael Ibeazor was the arrest of three suspected car thieves. According to the dcP, on the 6th of June, one Abiola of Omojolu compound, Iseyin who is a car dealer reported to the police that prior to the date of his report, he had a business transaction with one Honourable Olayinka of the Oyo State House of Assembly to deliver a Honda Odyssey car to him in Ibadan and that arrangement for payment would be perfected after delivery.

However, on getting to Ibadan for the delivery, the car dealer made a call to his customer, Honourable Olayinka, and he was directed to deliver the car to a particular man at Oremeji, Ibadan, claiming that he (Honourable) was busy with some pressing official matters and arragement was made on when he would pay.

It later dawned on the dealer that he had been duped by an unknown person who intercepted the call he made to the said Honourable Olayinka at the point of delivery. Hon. Olayinka, who had not seen what he ordered for, was shocked when the car dealer came to ask for payment of the car he was yet to receive.

After a thorough investigation into the matter, three men were later seen negotiating the sale of the vehicle suspected to be stolen. A swift action was taken and the men were promptly arrested and the vehicle, which later turned out to be the Honda Odyssey, was recovered.

A serial burglar, one Mathew Okunola was also paraded at the occasion. He was said to have been arrested in a ceiling while perpertrating his illegal act at Bodija area of Ibadan.

The prompt intervention of the police however led to the arrest of the suspect who gained access into the complainants apartment by cutting the windows burglary proof. Having noted the presence of the police, the burglar hid himself in the roof of the house trying to escape through the ceiling.

Meanwhile, unknown to him, the whole area had been cordoned off with tear-gas which prevented him from escaping. He was subsequently arrested and the loot which included twenty pounds, two handsets and two rings were recovered from him.
