Three Richland residents smoking a joint in their car were arrested after they pulled up next to a detective in an unmarked patrol car at a stop light, police said.

The plain-clothes detective was on George Washington Way at a red light on Columbia Point Drive around 9 a.m. Friday when he saw a car pull up on his right, said Richland police Capt. Jeff Taylor.

The detective saw a woman and two men inside the vehicle and watched as the front seat passenger passed what appeared to be a marijuana joint to the backseat passenger, Taylor said.

He then reportedly saw the backseat passenger take two deep drags off the joint.

The detective called patrol officers, who stopped the vehicle and identified the occupants as Alexis Clark, 19, Brandon Mercear, 19 and Sean Krekel, 20.

Clark was the driver.

After getting a warrant to search the car, officers found several containers of marijuana, marijuana pipes, grinders and a scale in the vehicle, Taylor said.

All three suspects were arrested on suspicion of possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.
