I used a IR thermometer on my 400W HPS the other night. The bulb itself was over 350° F. and the shield was just over 110° F. It was at night in a grow room with fans going.
My light is a disassembled hubbell 400W HPS. It was all enclosed in an aluminum housing (brown). We used these at a factory I used to work at. I think it radiated more heat before I took it out of it's enclosure and hung the ballast on the wall with an air gap behind it. It runs at about 135° F. but a fan blowing air on it helps. These are general #'s. hope it helps some.
