Please help with lighting and tent size question....time is an issue...

:welcome: Need more info first, how many square feet? need L & Width. A 400 will work great as long as you can keep it cooled, train the branches as plant grows, so they all stay the same height. you'll find all your answers here!

Hello trichomes. dimensions are 51.5wx22.5dx48.5tall. square feet=8.02(right?) good size for scrog? indica only is my plan. 4 ft height to unsafe for hps? thanks again.

your are right on track! 400 watt will kick ass in there, Indica scrog is ideal for that size, just keep the bulb cool, and I'd keep a fan blowing on the top of the plant to keep it short, maybe another fan cooling the bulb?? I've never used the newer, air-cooled bulb/tubes I've seen. keep us posted:thumb:

I found this under the Secret Jardin suggestion you got from BEN (above) found this on google and pasted it below, plagiarism is rampedd!

" a 2x4 secret jardin with a 600W Hortilux HPS. I'm not an experienced grower by far but I have had good success after a little tweaking. I live in the southern US and temperatures reached above the 110s this summer so controlling heat was very important.

It's over kill but I use a 6" 400 cfm inline fan to draw air from the ac controlled room through the cool tube to the attic. To create negative pressure in the tent and suck the heat out I use a 6" 350 or 400 cfm hydrofarm inline fan for air outtake and a 225 (i think) cfm 6" inline fan to put cool air from the room in the tent. I cut two 6" holes in the ceiling drywall to vent into the attic (crawling in the attic was the hardest part of the setup but the most necessary for my situation). I found an aluminum 6" duct attachment pipe thing at home depot that sticks to the ceiling so I can attach the ducting. I run the cool tube fan 12/12 and the other two 24/7.

Even with the heat at 113 F outside I was able to keep my temps down to about 82-85 during the day and 75-78 at night. I never used CO2 so I could have had higher yields probably but i was getting about 1 oz per plant (Grape Ape and G-Bomb) in 1 gallon pots SOG style. I also never use a carbon filter as the small doesn't get that bad or a temp control unit. I recommend old pantyhose to cover all air intakes (those stupid bug catchers are expensive and ive found stalkings work just as well). Covering the fan intakes will make your fans last longer and keep bugs out. I'll post a basic drawing of my setup in a little bit." This scenario uses a 600 watt bulb, so you don't need as much CFM fan power.

For SCROG, you want the plants much bigger than you need for SOG. You can use four or eight plants in the same space where you might use 30 for SOG. In my current SCROG grow, I targeted 36" final height and missed short... luckily I had a little extra space.

I would argue that this is NOT suitable for SCROG. It is 48" tall. You need a container - so lets give that 12". You need a light - most reflectors take 8 to 10" of space. You need air space below the light to keep from burning the plants - so lets give that 6". When we subtract from 48 - you are left with 20" for plant growth. Typical finished height in a SOG is 18 to 20".

If you use this tent for SCROG, you will be fighting the light on every grow.

There are much better tents for SCROG that are cheaper all over the web - you need at least a 6ft tent, IMO. I am sure some site sponsor likely has something available - I don't have time to check. I am not allowed to post a link - but for a quick example you can go to Amazon and type in Aviditi Hydroponic Grow Tent. These are very good quality for the price - and come in sizes up to 6.5' tall. Much better choice for SCROG, IMO.

:goodluck:

Thanks for all the help and input, guys. I guess I've misread the research I've been doing...I thought that short space=good for scrog. But I guess that is assuming that a person is using CFL's, right? I was hoping to have ALL 3 of my tents in my closet, but I guess only my mother tent/cloner is going to be, so I guess i'll just have to accept that i'll need a higher tent/box. I suppose though that, if I did use CFL's in that tent, it would be perfect for scrog, right?

With what you said this morning, I decided to check around and see what I could find.

It would seem that I have a different definition of SCROG than you do. In doing research on this, I came across this thread: Can You Give an Example of a SCROG Cabinet?

It does, in fact, show a grower who is successfully using SCROG in a small environment like you indicate. He also gives pointers on do's and don'ts to make it all work. Looks very credible. And he is using a 250W HPS - not a CFL set up - in a 2x2 cabinet - rather than a 4x2 space.

So.. thanks. You have reinforced the concept that definition of terms matters in successful communication. There are lots of different methods - all of which are called SCROG.

Thanks for that post, GreatLife4All! I've doing research on SCROG for the last few weeks...I just couldn't really get a definitive input on the recommended height of the cabinet/tent. The 4-foot tall tent that I want to use looks like it should work just fine. Now, if you'll answer me this question: what is the average height for a SOG grow? I'm only going to do indica's...I've heard 20-23 inches really is the height you'll get doing SOG, but again, it seems that everybody has a different opinion on this as well. Thanks again for the great info.

The screen is at a set height above the plant medium. This height varies from 8” to 24” depending on the size light used to grow with. The light should be hung by chains and adjustable so that one can raise it if needed. 4 foot tent works fine for you! keep us posted! love to see some pics before and after!
