The defendants -- 11 in all -- include a mother and son and a husband and wife.

One of the defendants was found hiding on a roof, a detective said. Eight are Vietnamese. One is Laotian. One is in the country illegally and faces deportation once his case is resolved.

All of the defendants have been charged with conspiracy to possess marijuana with the intent to distribute. Some were held Monday without bail, and some were released with restrictive conditions.

Most of the defendants said they could not afford their own attorney or speak English. Few had family members or friends in the courtroom when they appeared for hearings. It is also unclear how the men and women are connected and whether the investigation will reveal a wider operation.

The homes where the plants were found were pricey, many worth nearly $400,000, and in nice neighborhoods including Hopkinton, Canterbury, Concord and Pembroke.

The homes were listed as being owned by Vietnamese men or women, many of whom gave the same Revere, Mass., addresses to mortgage companies. Some of the sales went though the same mortgage company and realtor.

The police made their first arrest in October when a fire at a Hooksett home led to the discovery of $2.7 million worth of marijuana plants, the police said. The home's electrical wires, which had been rerouted to bypass a meter, had started the fire.

in all honesty im all for the weed grower but maaan if your gonna do that large of a crop you need to make sure its electricall safe, its the biggest factor in a lot of busts of large quantities. in a way i bet they deserved it, KARMA got the best of them and will get the best of us all at some point or another

They shouldnt be trying to cheat the electrical company either, just another reason to get busted ... so why do it?

I completely agree. Whether we like it or not, marijuana is still illegal in our country, so our conscious decision to enjoy the herb is also a decision to disobey the law. Breaking the law for my own personal benefit, to enjoy pot, is a victimless crime. I'm fairly sure the people I've ever dealt with concerning pot are not violent criminals nor a detriment to society. So I can feel ok with breaking that particular rule. Bypassing electrical meters and such however is a different matter. It is stealing. If pot were a legal product, it would still be illegal if you stole it. The people that get busted in these cases deserve it because they are just flat out stealing from the honest livelihoods of others. That is wrong, regardless of if it's weed related or not.

Looks like some body will be studying up on electrical applications at the prison library. :laughtwo:

Probly lucky they didn't get fried when they first by passed the meter. :Rasta:

Dumb,dumb,dumb,dumb........DUMB! Use the melody from the old Dragnet TV show. :tommy:

If your growing that big, you have no choice but to steal it. It's not that they didnt wanna pay for it, they couldnt. When your monthly electric bill is in the thousands, it's sure to raise an eyebrow.

They should have bought a generator. & some sound insulation. Man, I wish I could get a propane powerd elec generator. In case the lights go out dontcha know.

Sad to say that these people were only Tending the Gardens. There are several thousand of these operations in Canada, USA, Mexico, going on involving this method of operation. Utilizing Vietnamese and Laotions, and other nationalities, this is corporate business. But, I think it woould be a kick to really look at who or what entities are behind the scenes.

If the cops would realize they are only being used & manipulated as puppets & shills to protect the big money machines of cotton, synthetc fabric & the big synthetic pharma industries based on the lies, misrepresentations & deceptions that these people employ, maybe things would change.

The Officers at LEAP (see the link below my sig.) are calling for the end to the war on drugs. These couragous souls put the whole drug war thing into true perspective. If they were wrong about their stance they would not take it. These men & women are or were on the street, doing the "protect big pharma" thing when they came to the conclusion "fighting the drug war this way is useless!" If MJ was so dangerous they would not call for the RE-legalization of MJ & few of us here would use it.

We are not stupid peeps. We would not use something that would hurt, harm or kill us, like heroin, coke, crack, ect. Being smart is what also keeps us shy about using dangerous Rx drugs though they are legal. Many of the legal drugs are killers. We know that. The fact that they can be addicting was illustrated by Rush Limburger & the mess he got away with when he was caught with more mother's little helpers than any one could possibly need. I bet if he got busted with cannabis he'd be in jail for 40 years.

I for one am getting fed up with the Gov's. duplicitous double standards when it come to grass & Rx drugs.

Yers for takin a bite out of crime. The crime of lying to we the peeps by Gov. protecters of the most dangerous pushers of all time: the murdering syntheitic chemical industry & their DEA & FDA lap dogs. Like I said-I'm with Steppenwolf-"God damn the pusher man!!!"
