An increasing number of unemployed young Europeans are selling or even cultivating drugs to make money. The main home-grown drug is cannabis, the drug of choice for many Europeans. The European Commission has highlighted how the economic crisis has affected all markets, including the market for narcotics and for marijuana most of all. In 2010 alone, sales of marijuana generated €7-10 billion. European Council experts believe that anti-drugs laws in place in most member states are also worsening the problem, saying that laws against cultivation and distribution of marijuana are actually pushing up the market price. Growers and traffickers take a substantial cut of profits for running the risks of being caught, arrested, of attacks and violence, as well as to cover the costs of the clandestine farming.
