A Former Coronation Street actor who played a drug dealer in the soap and was then jailed for selling cannabis faces a longer sentence if he doesn't pay back nearly £60,000.

Christopher Hargreaves played five roles in the popular ITV soap in the 80s and 90s, with his final role being gangster drug dealer, Carl Foster, who caused the death of popular character Des Barnes.

Hargreaves, 50, who is currently serving a four year sentence for his possession of cannabis with intent to supply and having crime-tainted cash, has been told that he must pay back £58,035.70 in three months or risk having nine months added to his sentence.

His former wife and 'pillar of the community' Samantha Hargreaves, 48, was ordered to pay back the full amount she benefited from the drug deals, a total of £21,715 within six months.

She signed three bank accounts into the possession of Greater Manchester Police, and at the time of the trial it was accepted that she had been implicated by her former husband.

The pair laundered £17,500 through their children's bank accounts, and had bought a £24,000 caravan and a £4,000-a-year pitch with the money, which could not be explained by their income from his part time work and her mobile hairdressing business.

Officers from GMP raided the Hargreaves's former family home in Kersal, Salford in Greater Manchester, where they lived with their five children, and found 3kg of high-grade cannabis with a street value of almost £8,500 in their garage.

Hargreaves, who is also known for appearances in Hollyoaks and Inspector Morse, turned to organized crime after acting opportunities flagged.

A Proceeds of Crime hearing at Manchester Crown Court heard that he benefited from £119,717.50 because of his criminal activities.

During the trial a jury was told that £38,000 of money was found stuffed into Tesco carrier bags, shoe boxes and drawers at their property, and their bank accounts were then investigated.

His ex-wife Samantha was found guilty of money laundering and given 18 months jail time, suspended for two years, with supervision and 120 hours unpaid work.

Hargreaves' drug dealing dated back to January 2012, and he was found guilty of possessing class B drugs with intent to supply, money laundering and possessing club drug M-Kat.

Following an appeal he had his sentence cut from four-and-a-half years to four years.
