A DERELICT pub on a busy city road was home to a cannabis farm growing drugs worth an estimated £200,000.

After a tip-off, police found the Red Lion pub in Chapel Street, Patricroft, packed to the rafters with 77 cannabis plants, along with lighting and heating equipment.

Det Const Neil Charnock, of Greater Manchester Police, said: "Someone has obviously gone to a lot of time and trouble setting up this cannabis factory and has gone to great lengths to conceal their activities.

"However, unfortunately for them, we have halted what would have been a vast money-making opportunity.

"As well as the immediate impact this recovery has had, we have also had a more positive impact upon the streets of Manchester.

"Drugs have a wider detrimental effect on communities than people initially think. To pay for drugs many people resort to breaking the law.

"Many innocent people have their homes broken into and become victims of crime so that people can fund their habit.

"Greater Manchester Police are committed to tackling drugs and the detrimental effect that they have on society.

"And in order for us to continue this particular fight we require assistance from the local community.

"The pub is on Chapel Street, just off the A57 Liverpool Road, and is in a highly-populated residential area.

"I am sure there are some local residents who will have seen people going to and from the pub over the past weeks."

Anyone with information is asked to contact the police on 0161 872 5050 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
