Chicago-AP -- According to new crime statistics, the number of marijuana arrests in Chicago increased by more than 12 percent last year, while the number of arrests for other drugs declined slightly since 200.

According to Illinois State Police statistics that are scheduled for formal release today, statewide marijuana arrests increased by nine-and-a-half percent. The increase in Chicago, however, was 12-point-one percent.

The highest increases in marijuana arrests came in five Chicago police districts which all recorded rises of more than 20 percent.

Police said the increases were not the result of their infiltration operations against drug rings, since those tactics are directed against heroin and cocaine dealers and users, rather than marijuana dealing.
