LOS ANGELES—After closing the loophole allowing hundreds of medical marijuana dispensaries to open across Los Angeles, the city council has begun working to shut them down.

By Friday, 665 outlets had applied for exemptions from a 2007 temporary ban on new dispensaries allowing those with pending applications to open without permission and stay open.

The council will hold hearings to close those dispensaries that filed applications for exemptions.

Councilman Ed Reyes, who will oversee those hearings, says he can deal with two or three cases in an hour, which could tie up the Planning Committee for days.

Also Friday, the council voted to give itself more time to write an ordinance that would keep dispensaries 1,000 feet from each other, schools, libraries and parks.

Why are they trying to shut them down? what are they doing wrong?

the 1,000 feet from schools, parks, etc.. is a good idea i think, but is that all they are looking for? or just trying to shut everything down?
