City Planners To Review Marijuana Rules

The Traverse City planning commission will meet tonight to discuss a proposed ordinance that would regulate growing and distribution of medical marijuana.

A public hearing on the subject could be scheduled for July 7.

A committee of residents, patients, caregivers and city leaders met four times in the last month to draft an ordinance that offers a way for the city to address concerns that arise.

Michigan voters approved medical marijuana in November 2008.

Traverse City's ordinance outlines rules for marijuana growing operations in residential areas and industrial districts, as well as the daytime use and distribution of the drug in what are termed "collectives" – sites in commercial or hospital districts.

"We were really trying to deal with the land-use impacts," said Russ Soyring, the city's planning director, who worked with the advisory committee. "If this operation of growing marijuana was creating a nuisance, we could address the nuisance."

A city moratorium on permits for sale or transfer of marijuana is set to expire Aug. 19.

The planning commission will meet at 7 p.m. tonight in the commission chambers of the Governmental Center, 400 Boardman Ave. in Traverse City. To view the agenda, visit Traverse City Michigan Government. Select "City Boards" from the "Government" menu.
