A Fayette County family is hopeful the Legislature will vote in favor of a bill that would legalize medical marijuana in Pennsylvania.

Julie Michaels, of Connellsville, said her 6-year-old daughter, Sydney, has been a part of a government study of cannabis oil in the treatment of children suffering from seizures.

Sydney has lived with Dravet syndrome her whole life. It causes severe epileptic seizures, sometimes multiple times a day, Michaels said.

"Sydney has tried and failed 13 different epileptic drugs up to this point. She's tried medical diets. She's very limited on what's left for her to try," Michaels said.

Michaels said the cannabis oil Sydney has been using as part of the trial has helped decrease the frequency of her seizures. Her service dog, Lexus, also helps in alerting the family before Sydney has seizures.

"With that high CBD oil, we have seen great improvements with her seizure control. We still think it could be better if we were allowed or had the freedom to play with the different types of cannabis that we're using and the different ratios," Michaels said.

Michaels and other families with children in similar cases have been making trips to Harrisburg to ask state legislators to approve a bill that would legalize the use of medical marijuana in Pennsylvania.

Gov. Tom Wolf said he would sign the bill into law if it passed the state House. The bill passed the state Senate in May with a 40-7 vote.

"This is hope for us. Sitting here right now, it's really hard to put into words how much this would mean to us." Michaels said.
