Czech Police Detain 21 Vietnamese On Suspicion Of Hemp Growing

Prague - The Czech police and customs officers detained 21 Vietnamese on suspicion of growing and distribution of marijuana, most of which they smuggled abroad, the customs and police drug units´ heads, Pavel Hoffman and Jakub Frydrych, told journalists today.

The suspected gang was arrested in early August, after several months of monitoring.

The gang produced up to 1,400 kilograms of the drug a year, thus earning an annual 100 million crowns.

The suspects have been accused of illegal production and handling of narcotic substances.

Twelve of them face up to 18 years in prison, if found guilty.

The remaining nine, who worked as growers at the hemp farms, face up to 10 years behind bars.

All suspects except for one have been taken into custody.

Within the operation codenamed Cahn, the customs officers and police have uncovered eight large-scale hemp farms. Hundreds of officers assisted in the August 4 extensive raid that cracked down on the gang simultaneosuly at several places in the country,

Another four people have been caught abroad in this connection.

The police expect further people to be arrested.
