dark period

I'd say it would. It may not seem like much, but plants are sensitive. I don't know about needing complete darkness. I can't remember the last time I went outside at night and it was completely dark. The moon provides a good amount of light most of the time. It is reflected light though.

SlimDog, outdoors is different. Maybe someone else could explain in more detail, but I do know they are less sensitive to light abnormalities than indoor plants.

It could have something to do with the gradual change in the light from the sun, verses the on or off of a light. Maybe the plant somehow gets used to the light and any change would cause stress.
