MORGAN HILL, Calif. -- A month-long investigation in the countryside by the sheriff's marijuana suppression team finally paid off Sunday, NBC11 News reported.

The investigation began four weeks ago when a sheriff's helicopter spotted a marijuana farm on a hillside near Morgan Hill.

Deputies said they spent the last six days in camouflage hiding in heavy brush to stake out the operation.

Deputies confiscated as many as 5,000 marijuana plants and several firearms, and arrested five adults along with three minors, authorities said.

When deputies went searching for one of the suspects, they said they stumbled across something else.

More than 100 roosters were discovered, all part of a crude facility dedicated to cockfighting, deputies said.

Empty beer cans, drugs and fighting blades used for the illegal sport were also found, sheriff's Deputy Dino Diaz said.

The birds are now in the hands of animal control.
