Strains with knock off names such as AK-87, black widow, etc. Should they be avoided or can they be a cheaper or better alternative to the name brands?
Fake sounding strains.

Unless you are a serious connoisseur of bud, some of this stuff is just like the other, only cheaper
One example is Bubblelicious (Nirvana). I wanted to grow Bubblegum (Serious Seeds). I couldn't afford Bubblegum at the time, so I ordered Bubblelicious instead and it was a great strain!

When it comes down to it... Its all the same plant. Indica and Sative variations for the most part along with the somewhat pure strains. When they name strains, it is simply a grower puting a name on his seeds. Research the genetics and THC% when picking a strain. Always helps if you can.
