Ketchum-based non-profit Idaho Basecamp, a leading resource for outdoor adventure education, announces the grand opening of its Borah Basin Building, named and underwritten by the Elaine P. Wynn and Family Foundation.

The wilderness retreat facility, located outside of Sun Valley Idaho, is the epicenter of a master plan for Idaho Basecamp, as well as the first public facility built from hemp in the United States. The grand opening for the community is scheduled for Saturday, August 5, 2017 from 1:00p - 4pm at Idaho Basecamp.

Founded in 2014, Idaho Basecamp, (IBC) is committed to cultivating leaders, individual and community development, and serving the environment. These core values are at the center of creating IBC and will help grow the next generation of outdoor enthusiasts.

With the support of The Elaine P. Wynn and Family Foundation, along with others from the community, the Borah Basin Building is the first completed building of the master plan — that will also include sustainably built cottages and a main lodge.

The Borah Basin Building at Idaho Basecamp is made with approximately 75% recycled materials, a passive solar design and will be heated with solar thermal. Moreover, as North America's first public facility built with hemp, it is an example of responsible and sustainable architecture.

Mattie Mead, Ketchum resident and founder of Hempitecture, explains that Borah Basin's hempcrete materials are an insulated bio-aggregate that uses the wooden core of the industrial hemp stalk as its primary constituent.

When this wooden core is combined with a lime-mineral based binder and water, it absorbs carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and uses it as a regent to solidify into an insulating form.

In this sense, the walls in the Borah Basin Building have permanently sequestered carbon dioxide from our atmosphere in creating a comfortable, insulated, and natural feeling space.

"We could not have created this sustainable and amazing building which serves as the core of our master plan, without the Elaine P. Wynn and Family Foundation," says Idaho Basecamp Founder Mathew Gershater. "The graciousness of Elaine and her family will have a lasting impact on many people for years to come"

The August 5th afternoon at IBC will celebrate the community that has been enriched by this building with music and sample offerings of some of the programming that makes IBC a unique community facility. It will also serve as a big thank you for the many hands and donations that went in to making this amazing building a reality.
