FL: Orlando City Council To Discuss Banning New Medical Marijuana Facilities

Orlando city leaders on Monday will discuss a proposed ordinance that would ban any new medical marijuana dispensaries from opening in the city limits.

The vote is in reaction to a new state law that requires local governments to regulate dispensaries no more harshly than pharmacies, preventing them from capping the total number of facilities.

Orlando passed an ordinance in May restricting the total number of facilities within the city to seven and limiting how far they must be from churches, parks and other areas.

Pharmacies do not face those restrictions, so medical marijuana dispensaries cannot face them either, according to the new state law.

With these regulatory powers stripped from the city, officials are looking to consider exercising one restriction they have left: banning new facilities outright.

Knox Nursery has already opened one dispensary in Ivanhoe Village, with another going through the permit process.

City documents say those facilities will be grandfathered in and allowed to continue operation.

The ordinance will be discussed at the City Council meeting Monday–and is to be voted on at its July 24 meeting.
