A former Cameron High School assistant wrestling coach found with about $20 worth of marijuana could spend five years in prison if a jury finds he intended to distribute the drug.

Jeff Hughes, 49, of 51 Howard St., Cameron, was arrested earlier this year on a charge of possession with intent to deliver after the Ohio Valley Drug Task Force raided his home and found about 4 grams of marijuana and $243 in cash. His trial began Wednesday before Marshall County Circuit Judge John Madden.

Closing arguments in the case are set for today. If convicted, Hughes faces a maximum five years in prison.

According to testimony Wednesday, police in January found a tacklebox-type container in Hughes’ car, labeled ‘‘Cameron Athletics,’’ which contained an envelope holding $243 and some ‘‘shake” — the parts of marijuana left over after preparations to smoke or sell the drug.

Drugs were found in a kitchen drawer in Hughes’ house, and testing showed the bag held about 4.12 grams of marijuana. Marshall County Sheriff’s Deputy James Matthews said this amount of marijuana would sell for about $15 to $20.

Hughes himself testified Wednesday the money found in his car was from a $650 pay day loan taken out Jan. 12. He said he had already paid some bills when the police found the $243.

Matthews said Hughes told police during the search there was a baggie of ‘‘homegrown’’ underneath the sofa in the living room, which Matthews said he took to mean marijuana. However, Matthews said no drugs were found there.

During cross examination by defense attorney Keith Hart, Matthews indicated police did not find scales, cutting tools, paperwork related to use and distribution or photos of use or distribution. Police did find one pipe and rolling papers.

Additionally, Matthews testified he could not rule out that people at the house were not planning to smoke the marijuana found there.

Sheriff’s Detective Ross Lockhart said he also was part of the entry team, and he testified that he found a couple hundred marijuana seeds in the master bedroom as well.

Lockhart testified he heard Hughes say that any of the drugs found in the home belonged to him, but he could not speculate as to whether Hughes may have been trying to deflect guilt from anyone else in the house.
