Put your back hand as close as you can to the light.If it don't feel to hot or burn you, then your safe.That's what I do.I like to get my plants as close as I can, and with the hand trick it never fails.

Use your hand as a guide. Place your hand below the light at the top of the plants. Lower the light until you feel the heat upon your hand get hot then raise about two inches from that level. Check every couple of days as your plants will continue to grow during flowering also, hope this helps...
