Hydro question

ok ive looked and looked but cant seem to find an answer so i decided to jus ask


me and a friend are making a bubbler system and my question is about the cubes i see everyone using

question is do i have to use a cube of something or is there a way to do it without?

also should the bottom of the pots be touching the water?

The bottom of the net pots should be like an inch or two in the nutrient solution.
The cubes are extremely helpful, I wouldn't use something different.
