Kentucky Agriculture Commissioner James Comer was in Eastern Kentucky Tuesday, talking about new ways to boost Kentucky agriculture, including hemp.
"Industrial hemp is a crop that, it's not a drug, it's something that grows well in Kentucky. If we become one of the first states to grow industrial hemp, we'll create jobs," said Comer.
The commissioner made multiple stops in Eastern Kentucky on Tuesday. By the end of the year, he says he plans on visiting every county in the Commonwealth.
People talked to Comer about various concerns. One man, who is a supporter of the timber business in Eastern Kentucky, says he was impressed by Comer's presentation.
"He said he is a tree farmer, in addition to having conventional agricultural interests on his property, so he's a great guy. I really appreciate him coming over and taking our questions," said Grant Curry, a consultant on a timber project in Perry County.
Comer has other ideas for Eastern Kentucky too.
"There's an opportunity to have more livestock here, more cattle, more goats, more horses, but I believe there's a huge opportunity here in Eastern Kentucky to have more orchards, more fruit and vegetable production here in this end of the state," he said.
Comer says he would like to see Kentucky less dependent on places like California and Florida for produce.
The agriculture commissioner also made stops Tuesday in Letcher and Knott counties.
His state-wide tour wraps up next month in Martin County.
