NORTH COUNTY ---- Narcotics agents harvested a record July marijuana crop valued at $16.3 million as they raided 32 illegal gardens in Fallbrook, Escondido and Rainbow Heights, authorities said Monday.

The San Diego County Integrated Narcotic Task Force got rid of 108,702 plants and 30 pounds of processed marijuana ready for sale, said Special Agent Misha Piastro, spokesman for the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration in San Diego.

A more typical crop in July would be about 50,000 plants, Piastro said.

It doesn't necessarily mean that there are more illegal pot plots, said sheriff's Detective Steve Reed, a key NTF marijuana spotter.

"I think I just found them faster," Reed said.

John Fernandes, special agent in charge of the San Diego DEA office, said finding the marijuana gardens depends on getting someone up in the air to spot them and on other agencies helping in the joint effort.

"These gardens are well hidden," Fernandes said.

The San Diego County Sheriff's Department, the federal Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Forest Service, the National Guard and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement assisted in the investigations.
