I was wondering can i cut the long leaf so the nodes can get more light? Or is it not good to cut it?

I'd just bend (gradually) that main stalk with rope until it resembles a horseshoe. Leaves store good things that plants need, you can tuck/bend leaves too.

It won't hurt to take a couple off if it will increase bud spots
