Los Angeles

I don't live in LA but I've been there. All I can say is good luck with the traffic if you do move. But it's still a pretty spectacular city.

What part are you planning to move to?
I've lived there for about 9 years... and well, i only moved about 30 minutes away. L.A isn't all that cracked up to be... Lots of pretentious people along with crazy traffic there. But it's still a great city depending on what you're into.

well, i am not sure where i will end up just yet, i am still learning the geography of the place...i do want to be as close to the ocean as possible though, that much i do know...
i am working on a project there that will take about 6 months...
i don't have the budget for two places, so i figured i'd just move there for the project, then maybe stay after or go somewhere else...
regardless, i'm pretty certain i will be moving to l.a....
so...
i need as much info about the joint as possible...
layout, where to live, where not to live, cost of living, etc...
thanks everyone!

I live in L.A. I love it, it's the only city in america I'd ever live in. It's very expensive out here. Don't plan on buying a house unless you have at least $100,000.

East Los Angeles is where I live, we have a few gangs but they won't bother you if you don't bother them. Don't live anywhere near compton or Watts. If you don't mind alot of gays, West L.A. is good. North L.A. has alot of redneck hicks.

It's a BIG city and the best places to live are beverly hills or Santa Monica of course those places are the most expensive, an apartment will run you at least $2500 a month for something decent. Santa monica is right next to the ocean, so you'll have no problems with your little project. Lots of stoner surfers as well. Just be careful when you drive....

Traffic is not as bad as everyone thinks, yes it gets pretty bad but rarely are you ever stopped. It's always moving unless there's some sort of freak accident.

So all in all it's a kick ass city and after living here a couple months you'll get to know all of it. From the beaches of Santa Minca to Phillipes in downtown to the carnicerias in East L.A. to the porn shops in west L.A. and the trailer trash in North L.A. :p

thanks dag...
please, continue...
anyone else?

my lease runs out here at the end of this month, so, i am thinking to make the move then...all depends on if they are going to cover my relocation expenses or not...i think they will...we'll see tomorrow when we have the conference call...

don't want to be surrounded by gangs or rednecks...
i think thugs are everywhere...
i look tough enough, i'm sure i'll be fine...;)
but don't need a posh environment either...
something in between...

going to buy a book of l.a. today...
thanks guys!

LA huh? Good luck. Too expensive. Too many people. Too many cars, too many freeways that don't move, for the most part.. very shallow people.

Good things.. diversity, weather, beaches. Four major airports so you can always go places real cheap.

i live in l.a, woodland hills. its tight here. the other guy basically said everythin about l.a. theirs a lot of nice shit out here to see, and a lot of good weed too haha.

As someone born and raised in LA, I suggest you dont move here. Housing is EXTREMELY expensive right now. Of course, in certain areas, housing is still affordable, but those are probably not the areas you would be interested in living in. Knowing what I do about you, I suggest finding an area near or in San Francisco. About as expensive as LA, but MUCH MUCH MUCH more liberal and pot friendly, as well as meeting all the other criteria of LA.
If you ARE dead set on moving to LA, try to find housing in the suburbs, just outside of LA. THe San Fernando Valley is a good one, Burbank is a little pricier but a very nice city. Glendale, Pasadena, and Van Nuys are also good alternatives, with each of those areas having, of course, "good" and "bad" areas that you will have to find out about. But again, if you are looking for a liberal, pot friendly environment in california, San Francisco is the way to go. Plus, it's only a 5 hour car ride, or about an hour flight, from LA.

i have to be in l.a. for the project...i'm not driving hours to the studio every day... i'll find out tomorrow if i get relocation budget... if i do, i'm headed to l.a. in 3 weeks.

just got home with 3 los angeles maps from barnes and noble...but no tacks to put them up on the wall....sheesh...

Three weeks.. I thought you said settling.. wait let me check.. scrolls down to see what was said exactly and finds:

"Who lives in L.A.?

I'm thinking of moving there..."

For three weeks, yeah.. the Valley. And I don't live in LA area anymore.. Bay Area now.. God's country!

No matter where you are in the LA area you'll be driving or in a car for long periods of time.. am I right Mr PM?

i don't go out much...
i work all of the time, from home...
i leave in 3 weeks..
will be there for 3-6 months...
got my tacks..
putting the maps of los angeles on the wall...
more feedback please.
anyone else in l.a.?

East Los Angeles is the way to go if you don't want to pay an arm and a leg. It's not a good neighborhood but it's not bad either, just mind your business and you'll be fine. I'm pretty sure you're not a dumbass, I'm sure you'll do fine in East Los. You can get to any part of Los Angeles in about 20 minutes traffic permitting. The easiest beach to get to would be Santa Monica its about 20 minutes without traffic maybe 45 min to an hour during rush hour.

Traffic going east and west towards downtown isnt so bad, although there are some days. If traffic is an issue I wouldnt suggest living south or north of downtown.

Another good neighborhood would be Montebello or Montery Park. Montebello is mostly mexican, Monterey park is mostly asian. Not very expensive, safer than where I live although it's still technically East Los. I had an apartment in Montebello for $1500 a month.

I wouldn't suggest south central for any reasons, I'm assuming you're white and if so you'd be thought of as an undercover cop. If you aren't white then you'd get randomly searched by cops being stripped of all your rights.

It's an awesome city, I love it here. Ever here the song under the bridge by red hot chili peppers? That's how I feel about my Los Angeles.

But yeah, sounds like East Los Angeles would be the place for you.

Take it, That is a VERY good deal. Although it's not really Los angeles but close enough. It's a diverse area, has it's bad sides and good sides. Lots of weed in anaheim, disneyland is in anaheim. The beach is about the same distance away, anaheim is south of Los Angeles not much farther away east.

It's mostly white, but be wary of white trash. I would take that in a heart beat my friend.

Absolutely.

And 420, Anaheim is a decent area. Its right next to Disneyland, Knotts Berry Farm, WIld Bills, Midevil Times, and Angel stadium. The area is diverse, I dont think it matters what color you are (although just like everywhere, I'm sure there are areas where you wont want to go if you are a certain skin tone). The nice thing is, the Amtrack runs through Anaheim, and its a relativley short train ride to LA. But it is far to drive. About 50 minutes away if you drive to LA, and not very close to the beach at all. $700 is amazing in California, which means it's probably not in the best of areas, and if its not in a bad area, its probably somewhat remote. If you are looking for beach areas close to LA, look in Santa Monica.

Anaheim is a great area, my cousin lives there, I'm about 30 minutes away. not too far from the beach, got disneyland, from what I hear cost of living is particularly high, so 700 isn't a bad deal at all.

my favorite beach in the southern california area is huntington. it's pretty, there's lots of shopping, easy to score some bud, but it's not over-populated, your not gonna have a hell of a time trying to fight your way through a crowd.
