Portland, Maine - Advocates for the legalization of possession and recreational use marijuana will be opening a campaign headquarters in Portland ahead of the November ballot. The office will open at 640 Brighton Avenue on Thursday evening.

Question One on the November 2016 ballot will read, "Do you want to allow the possession and use of marijuana under state law by persons who are at least 21 years of age, and allow the cultivation, manufacture, distribution, testing, and sale of marijuana and marijuana products subject to state regulation, taxation and local ordinance?"

The pro-marijuana campaigners say marijuana would be regulated like alcohol to people 21 years of age and older. However, an anti-marijuana group in Maine called Mainers Protecting Our Youth And Communities says they are against the legalization of marijuana because it would put young people at risk. The group says marijuana is more potent than it has been in the past, and is geared toward attracting children as it now comes in forms like gummy bears and cookies.

Come this November, voters will be able to vote yes or no on 1 for the legalization of marijuana use and possession. If the piece of legislation is voted in, people living in Maine will be able to possess and use 2.5 ounces of marijuana.

Marijuana was decriminalized in Maine in 2009, and medical marijuana was legalized in 1999.
