Federal agents arrested a man and woman from Washington Monday after mechanics in St. Paul found more than 150 pounds of marijuana stashed in a pickup truck's gas tank.
Marvin E. Kennedy, 48, and Patsy R. Floyd, 62, are being held in the Ramsey County jail on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance. Charges hadn't been filed this afternoon.
Kennedy and Floyd told investigators they were driving from Washington to Chicago, said Kent Bailey, acting agent in charge of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration's Twin Cities office.
"Their bad luck is their vehicle had some fuel problems and they ended up taking it into a Midas Shop," Bailey said.
A technician at the Midas at 1415 White Bear Ave. in St. Paul realized the pickup truck had a modified gas tank and there were fresh weld marks on it, Bailey said. He called the pair and said the tank needed to be replaced.
"They said, 'Don't touch the gas tank, leave it alone. We'll be right there,' " Bailey said. "He got suspicious and they called the State Patrol."
Knowing gas tanks are a "prime place to hide narcotics," the Minnesota State Patrol called the DEA, Bailey said.
Investigators found 157 pounds of marijuana stuffed into two compartments welded into the gas tank, Bailey said. The marijuana appears to be from Mexico and sells for about $1,000 a pound in Minnesota, Bailey said.
Using the contact phone number Kennedy and Floyd left with Midas, investigators tracked them to the Hastings Inn and arrested them.
