Medical Marijuana Can Save Denver's Bacon

Think about it. Denver International Airport occupies 53 square miles, including 16,000 to 18,000 acres of farm land. According to some estimates (pdf), one acre of cultivated land can yield approximately six tons of marijuana per year.

Denver could grow medical marijuana at DIA, effectively putting other, more dubious operations out of business by providing a safe, legal, superior medicinal product in greater volume and at lower cost than anyone else.

While we're at it, convert Denver's City Park Greenhouse to a year-round grow. Dispense the medicine through Denver Health.

By becoming the state's largest producer and dispenser of medical marijuana, Denver's safety and health officials would be in a unique position to track and regulate local marijuana supply and distribution.

Twice now, Denver voters have approved city laws favorable to users of medical marijuana. Voters here are likely to support a charter change or ordinance to allow the city to raise a crop.

Plus, medical marijuana is (somewhat) legal in Colorado. With a revenue-sharing proposal, our mayor probably can convince our cash-strapped governor and state legislature to remove statutory barriers to city-run cultivation. According to an article in today's Denver Post, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder announced in March that the federal government would respect state laws that allow marijuana.

Denver has idle topsoil, sunshine, security and room to expand at DIA. We have a willing political climate. We have the potential to bring millions of dollars to the city in a very short time by providing a prescribed substance to people who need it.

Medical marijuana has humanitarian value, which is a lot more than you can say for legalized high-stakes gambling in Colorado.

Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper must narrow the city's $120-million budget gap, but he doesn't want to raise fees or cut staff. He says he's open to suggestions.

Why not try weed?

Yes, the Feds would fall all over themselves in the rush to OK this hare brained scheme. Sheesh, I can hear how pot on airport land would be a terrorist magnet...
