Detroit police didn't have to go far to make their latest pot bust, which nabbed nearly 50 plants and over $125,000 in marijuana, according to Detroit Police Chief James Craig.
Police could smell it, even if they didn't suspect its operation, which is estimated to have lasted six months or more before police obtained a search warrant and entered Monday.
The operation was located in a concrete building across the street from the 11th Precinct headquarters at 5100 Nevada on the city's east side. There is also a closed liquor store at the address.
"Right across the street from the 11th Precinct, people thought they could harvest marijuana," the chief said. "Once they got in, they found 12,472 grams (about 450 ounces) with a street value of $127,420.
"That's pretty substantial."
Detroit police think its possible something went wrong with air filtration system, because the pungent, skunk-like musk of marijuana was detectable by police in the parking lot across the street.
Cpl. John Siejutt said officers first noticed the smell Sunday.
He said two people were arrested during the raid, but it's not entirely clear who is behind the grow operation. There was a man renting the building for $4,000 a month, he said, which is well above the market rate for that section of the city.
Siejutt said the plants were as high as 7 feet tall, some as the size of a "small evergreen" trees.
"It's bold and brazen, kind of think about it, you have the best security being across from a police station," he said.
The Michigan Marijauna Act, passed by voters in 2008, allows a medical marijuana card holder to grow up to 12 plants. A certified caretaker is also permitted to grow 12 plants each for every assigned patient, so it is possible for someone to be permitted to possess up to 46 plants.
The chief did not address whether there were medical marijuana implications.
Detroiters in 2012 voted to decriminalize small amounts of marijuana -- an ounce or less -- if possessed by someone 21 or older.
