MONTREAL — An early morning fire in the Villeray area Monday revealed the presence of an estimated 6,000 marijuana plants, in the second large-scale pot growing bust in Montreal in two weeks.

The street value of the plants could be as high as $6 million because when mature, a marijuana plant has a street value of about $1,000.

Firefighters were called to a building on Mozart Avenue near St. Urbain St. for a fire about 1:15 a.m. It is believed that a Molotov cocktail was used to start the fire, Montreal police Constable Anie Lemieux said.

The fire was put out and there were no reported injuries, but firefighters called police in when they discovered the plants and some sophisticated marijuana growing equipment, including lights and irrigation systems.

Montreal police are trying to locate the owner of the building and the person or people involved in the marijuana grow op.

The find is the second large-scale pot growing operation busted in two weeks. On Dec. 15, Montreal police raided two office buildings in an industrial area in the Plateau Mont-Royal borough and seized 10,000 pot plants along with thousands of dollars worth of hydroponic growing equipment. A 55-year-old man was charged in that case, which police said was the one of the biggest marijuana seizures in the force's history.

But Montreal police Constable Olivier Lapointe said it is too early to say whether or not there are links between Monday's discovery and the raid on Dec. 16.

"When it happens like this, and we discover the plants by accident because of a fire, it means we are starting to investigate this (latest) case at zero," Lapointe said.

Meanwhile, in Laval on Saturday, police discovered 1,280 plants and 880 pot plant buds when they were called to a home where the security alarm was triggered on des Pervenches St. in the Ste. Dorothée district, Laval police Constable Franco Di Genova said. The large home was filled with plants and 93 lamps and irrigation equipment.

This "street value" BS is one of their favorite propaganda tactics. If the plants have no buds the street value is ZERO!!!

I betcha anything that the grow-op was using the Sea of Green method. 6K plants would be mind-bogglingly difficult for anybody to manage well enough to yield a pound each.If so, that figure they came up with would only amount to $1-1.5M at the greatest.

Still, their figures are a result of propaganda rather than actual amounts.
