Mother Of 4 Fined $600 For Cannabis

Francia Brann of Gray's Farm was convicted and fined $600 yesterday after she pleaded guilty to possession of cannabis in the St. John's Magistrates Court before Senior Magistrate Asquith Riviere.

The court heard that on Friday 1 Sept., about 6 p.m. Corporal Daley, along with another police officer, was on mobile patrol on North Street, when they saw Brann go past their vehicle

She reportedly walked past the police vehicle, which the officers were in going from east to west, with what appeared to be a cigarette in her hand.

One of the officers left the vehicle and as he approached Brann, she dropped, what the police suspected to be cigarette, on the street. The officer identified himself, picked up the cigarette and showed it to her. Brann was asked what the item was but she did not respond. She was told it resembled cannabis and that it was illegal to have in her possession, to which she said she was sorry.

The police also found a white (film) container, which contained cannabis.

When shown the substance, again Brann proceeded to apologise to the officer.

She was taken to the St. John's Police Station and charged. The substance amounted to more than three grammes.

The 29-year-old mother of four, was given until 15 Sept. to pay the fine or face a prison sentence of six weeks.

An order was made for the cannabis to be destroyed.

What a fucking disgrace, the women has four kids and your going to fine her $600 !? And somehow we have progressed more than other countries? At least if im arrested in Mexico it is only $40 dollars to get out of jail...

I agree with you Surfah.

But why, if it's illegal where she lived, would she be walking down a public street smoking a joint. Then to walk past a police car with officers inside. Wasn't there anywhere else to smoke?

Here in California, at the worst, you might get a little slap on the wrist.

It's sad to know that the same amount in a different state in the U.S. can cause you to lose your vehicle or worse, and get you a jail sentence and a record to go along with it. I know this was in Antigua, but it's still another example of how ridiculous the laws and attitudes about marijuana can be.
