Hey just picked up a double flourecent ballast for my 4, one week old, 3cm little hotties. Thing is the ballast came with 2 bulbs that give of what I would call a violtte light (not black) as it seems more white like a cool blue aswell as the uv effect on whites in the room. like one of those car lights the people with earings, shaved heads and names like Gaz and Daz put under thier Ford Escorts! anyway just wondering if it would be worth using these to suppliment the cool blue cfls I've already got (more light = good) untill I get the right size cool blues for these fittings. As I say they're not black UV, cause they give of a strong cool white aswell as the uv. I've already read up about Black lights being turd at anything except maybe turning your skin a nice shade of orange!! Cheers peeps

look at one of the ends of the bulbs and try to find a number followed by a K.

I use fluorescent lights for my grow - a combination of 3000K and 6500K bulbs.

The 6500K bulbs put off a bluish light and the 3000K bulbs look almost red/orange.

the 3000K bulbs are also sometimes labeled as "soft white" and the 6500K bulbs are sometimes labeled as "daylight"

But you definitely want to use a mix of the two spectrums. When you buy your bulbs also look for lumen output. Some bulbs have a lower wattage, therefore, less lumens. You want as many lumens as you can get.

Yeh like I said its just that these lights came with the ballast so and they dont say much more than that they're "15w tl-d". I know all the info to do with kelvin and lumens etc... I done me research iree!!!!
Also found that the same sort of lights for sale on the internet average about 900-1000 lumen each! Thing is this info was in German and it could have been talking about zee vhiter models. this is why I ask about the colour as I also read that anything towards the the purple side of the scale gives of little to no lumens at all...
Wa Gwan, wida bita buggle buggle, bumble squat....
If ya wanna feel happy when I say Rice, ya say and Pea!

I have some old (15+ years!!) flouro. grow bulbs that emit what looks like "purple" light. They are labled as "grow" lights but I have never seen another person ever mention them, which makes me think they are obsolete. These bulbs probably worked better when they were newer, but back in the day I did grow some plants from start to finish using only these bulbs. They were not the best yeilding plants thats for sure, but vegging with them is at least possible.

Well cheers for all the advice fellas. Got me cool blues today so i'm frickin' steaming ahead full flank. Got a stealth grow going in the bottom of a cupboard and man I tell thee, it wont matter if anyone finds it cause they wont be able to see! The old lack of any public saftey signs, it works everytime!!
However if there are any other ideas on the Violettes (not black), like for flowering or maybe keeping athletes Bud at bay whilst curing i'd be more than gratefull!!
Come on all you Gurus, one of you must have a use...
Ratty dog gone for now, peace!!
