this didn't really fit it the news dept. but i thought it might be good info for you voters to have:

Republican state Sen. Tom George of suburban Kalamazoo has launched a bid for Michigan governor in 2010.

George said in a news release he will file paperwork for a campaign committee to explore candidacy for the state's highest office.

George was elected to his second term in the state Senate in fall 2008; he served one term in the state House of Representatives.

He is an anesthesiologist who lives in Kalamazoo County's Texas Township. His 20th District covers all of Kalamazoo County and two Van Buren County townships.

Sherry Sofia, a Battle Creek city commissioner, serves as chief of staff in George's Senate office.

George was a leader of the opposition to a 2008 ballot proposal to lift restrictions on embryonic stem cell research in Michigan, and also spoke out against legalizing medical marijuana in the state.

With Gov. Jennifer Granholm unable to seek re-election because of term limits, speculation about who might seek the seat has begun to heat up around the state.

The Associated Press listed these potential Democratic candidates: Lt. Gov. John Cherry, Flint Mayor Don Williamson and Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano.

AP said Republican candidates may include Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson, Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land, Attorney General Mike Cox and U.S. Reps. Pete Hoekstra, Mike Rogers and Candice Miller.
