far as the too long of stem goes, as long as it doenst suddenly flop over and die then your fine.
if looks like it really wants to do that, you might want to stick something next to it you can kinda tie to for support. doesnt take much and wont take long for the stem to strenghten up just a week or so.
i have cut a piece of coathanger and use a pair of pliars to make a sorta little loop at the top and use that for an anchor.
