Medical marijuana, since the beginning in 1996, has been a gray area of the law, constantly redefined by court rulings and shifting law enforcement policies. In light of statements made by the Obama Administration regarding medical marijuana use, the owners of the Smoker’s Hut in Nipomo are seeking to clear the air with a little discussion: the Central Coast Cannabis Symposium. The June 6 event will feature local attorney Lou Koory, who has represented clients in several high profile medical marijuana cases in the county. It will also feature marijuana garden guru Ed Rosenthal of High Times magazine.

Smoker’s Hut owner Charles Shapiro said the main purpose of the symposium is to educate people on the local marijuana ordinances as well as state and federal regulations.

“We’re trying to support our community and educate the people who need to know these laws,” Shapiro said. “It’s a good thing for anyone with an interest in medical marijuana to come. We’re going to lay down hard facts about what are your rights.”

The symposium begins at 10 a.m. at the Smoker’s Hut, 671 Tefft St., and is followed by a gardening class with Rosenthal. The class is $85.
