Peat Pot Question...

I started my plants in 3" peat pots. Now I think its almost time to transplant. I am going to use 3 gal pots. Heres the question... can I just drop the peat pots into the new pots or do i need to take them out? Will the roots grow unrestricted thru the peat pots?

I usually just tear out the bottom and plant the whole thing.
