A fresh look at Americans' views on marijuana, by the Pew Research Center, shows support for legalization continues to rise.

In a poll of 1,201 adults conducted in late August, the nonprofit center found that 57 percent believe recreational use of marijuana should be legal; 37 percent said it should remain illegal. That fits a continuing pattern of change, and is almost a complete flip from 10 years ago, when 32 percent of Americans supported legalization and 60 percent opposed it.

The Pew survey also found persistent differences of opinion by partisan identity: Democrats favor legalization, 66 percent to 30 percent; 55 percent of Republicans oppose legalization, with 41 percent favoring it.

In April, Pennsylvania joined New Jersey and 22 other states that have medical marijuana programs. The Pennsylvania and New Jersey programs have many restrictions on accessibility, type of diseases and conditions that qualify, forms of marijuana that may be used, a ban on growing one's own marijuana, etc.

Four states and the District of Columbia have legalized recreational marijuana. On Nov. 8 residents of California, Massachusetts, Nevada, Arizona and Maine will vote on legalizing personal possession and use. In four other states, Montana, North Dakota, Florida and Arkansas, voters will have a say on allowing medical marijuana.

Is it time for New Jersey and Pennsylvania to give voters the definitive say on legalizing marijuana for personal use? Have a say in our informal poll, and feel free to join the conversation in the comments section.
