Rally Held To Support Proposed Marijuana Law

Supporters of legislation that would decriminalize the possession of small amounts of marijuana are holding a rally outside the state Capitol.

The bill passed through the Judiciary Committee this week.

It would change the penalty for possessing a half-ounce of marijuana or less from a misdemeanor to an infraction, eliminate the possibility of jail time and cut the maximum fine from $1,000 to $250.

People under 18 would continue to be charged under current laws.

Supporters plan to rally in Bushnell park at 2 p.m. on Saturday. They say the bill would cut millions in court costs and spare people from lifelong criminal records for what might be a one-time lapse of judgment.

Opponents say reducing the penalties could boost the market for marijuana and help its dealers.

On Friday, April 3, 2009, the New York State Legislature voted to overturn the Rockefeller Drug Laws that have been on the books since the early 1970's! It repeals mandatory sentencing, and opens the legal door for thousands of prisoners to eventually be released prior to their sentences. It's a long overdue victory, but it's only the beginning of the repeal of laws that dictate limitations on our very states of mind, the most personal form of freedom that a human being is capable of. I have been sending emails to members of the Senator and Assembly to thank them and encourage them to continue to stand up for freedom of mind.
