Global News correspondent Monique Muise reported on Thursday morning, June 30, 2016, at 11.56 a.m. EDT, a possible change in the legal status of marijuana in works for Canada. The narcotic drug, which currently is illegal, will soon become legal. Speaking on behalf of the country’s federal government, Justice Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould, made an announcement in Ottawa about a law that is expected to be tabled regarding the legalization of the narcotic substance in the spring of 2017.
The announcement is being perceived as an important long-pending task in Wilson-Raybould’s agenda. This is evident from her mention of the fact that the eventual legalization of marijuana in Canada is “the first step in a process.” However, the minister emphatically made it clear, that until the new law comes into force, the drug will continue to be illegal in the country. She also added, “the legal exceptions for medical use will continue to exist until then.”
Further, she explained there would be task force in place that will be responsible in the upcoming months to consult various organizations, territories, and law enforcement. They will also be speaking with companies who currently have expertise in the sale, distribution, and manufacturing of marijuana. Prior to legalization for recreational use, the government will be able to set laws in place that will protect children and keep it out of the hands of criminals.
Guy Caron of the New Democratic Party stated he was not entirely happy. While he is not in favor of rushing into legalization, he thinks the government should decriminalize marijuana for small quantities of non-medical possession.
