The Rhode Island House has approved legalizing the growth of hemp.

The House on Thursday approved a bill that would allow hemp cultivation and establish guidelines for it.

Hemp can be used to make textiles, lotions and other products. It is a type of cannabis plant and resembles marijuana, but it's non-intoxicating.

House Speaker Nicholas Mattiello says the state has an opportunity to create a new industry and create jobs.

The House amended the bill to limit the number of licenses issued by the state.

A cultivator's license would cost $25,000. It would have to be renewed every three years, for a $25,000 renewal fee.

A Senate committee is also considering legalizing hemp growth.

Twenty-two states allow hemp cultivation, but mostly for limited experimental testing and not for commercial industry.
